Virtual Resource Fair: Hurricane Readiness

  • Date: 07/18/2022 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
  • Introduction: The Office of Housing and Community Development and Civil Defense is co-hosting a virtual resource fair on hurricane readiness.

Hawai`i is no stranger to hurricanes. In 2018, Hurricane Lane was a powerful tropical cyclone that brought torrential rainfall and strong winds in late August 2018. The eastern slopes of Mauna Loa accumulated 58 inches of peak rainfall and peaked winds of 160 mph. Across Hawai`i Island, number of structures were damaged and multiple neighborhoods were flooded.

Having entered 2022 hurricane season, it is important to be prepared. In the below scheduled sessions, participants will hear from NOAA National Weather Service/Central Pacific Hurricane Center, Hawaiian Electric Company, County of Hawai`i Civil Defense Agency and Office of Aging on hurricanes in Hawai`i, the importance of knowing the risks, and what you can do about it.

“It is too late to plan and prepare when a Tropical Cyclone is about to impact the island, the time to prepare is now while the weather is calm! Develop an individual or family plan that includes where to go for sheltering, how to communicate with each other and put together the necessary supplies you will need. Also include vulnerable neighbors or person you may know so they are cared for. Don’t become a victim. Go to www.hawaiicounty.gov/departments/civil-defense for information on how to prepare for a Hurricane. Malama pono.” said Civil Defense Administrator, Talmadge Magno.
